Date Culture

Date Masamune was a prominent feudal lord in northern Japan during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
He played a significant role in shaping the history and culture of Sendai, the capital of the Date clan's domain in present-day Miyagi Prefecture.

More than your typical samurai

Date was a great patron of the arts and culture. Perhaps his most significant legacy is that of ‘Date-Bunka’ (Date culture) - a unique appreciation for aesthetics and hospitality that flourished during his rule and remains an integral part of Miyagi’s cultural identity today.
